EV sales in 2025 have reached a new high in Australia, driven by surging interest in models offered by Chinese makers BYD and Geely, and a rebound in the Tesla Model 3.
According to data supplied by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), a record 13,169 battery electric vehicles were sold in Australia in June, delivering a record market share of 10.3 per cent.
This was up from 9.2 per cent in May, and 8.3 per cent in June last year, and follows a rebound in the sales of Tesla EVs and the growing consumer interest in its new Chinese competitors.
Sales of plug-in hybrids were also strong – with 6,200 sold in June, with nearly half of them (2,993) the BYD Shark 6 ute and BYD’s Sealion 6 also doing well. That takes the total share of plug in vehicles to 15.2 per cent for the month.
The rise this year has been the result of multiple factors, including the rebound in Tesla sales, which posted its highest sales numbers since March last year, thanks to deliveries of the refreshed Model Y which began in May, and a resurgence of Model 3 sales off the back of incentives.
But sales of BYD and Geely have also surged, with BYD accounting for four of the top 7 full battery electric cars in the month, and Geely getting a strong uptake of its new EX5.

The latest surge in EVs has been driven by more competition than ever before, with Chinese brands having price decreases across multiple EV models due to EOFY specials. Along with that, the boost in interest in EVs has really driven drivers to make the switch sooner, helping thousands of new, cleaner cars on our roads.
This sets the stage for a blockbuster second half of 2025 as the new NVES will drive more cleaner models, offering more choice for drivers in 2025.
