China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales continued to grow last month, hitting the highest figure of this year.

In June, China’s passenger NEV retail sales totaled 1.111 million units, up 29.7 percent year-on-year and 8.2 percent month-on-month, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This figure exceeds the preliminary data of 1,071,000 units released by the CPCA at the beginning of the month and the estimated data of 1,100,000 units released at the end of last month.

This marks the highest monthly retail sales figure for passenger NEVs in China this year and the second time this year that sales have exceeded 1 million units.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 661,000 units in June, up 33.1 percent year-on-year and 7.8 percent month-on-month, according to the CPCA.

BEVs contributed 59.5 percent of total NEV retail sales in June, flat from May.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), excluding extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), saw retail sales of 334,000 units in June, accounting for 30.1 percent of NEV retail sales. This represents a year-on-year increase of 32.4 percent and a sequential increase of 12.3 percent.

EREVs accounted for 10.4 percent of NEV retail sales in June, with 116,000 units sold. This represents a year-on-year increase of 7.8 percent but a 0.3 percent decrease from May.

PHEVs and EREVs combined for 450,000 units sold in June, up 23.7 percent year-on-year and 8.7 percent from May.

China’s total passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs (sport utility vehicles), and MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), saw retail sales of 2.084 million units in June, up 18.1 percent year-on-year and up 7.6 percent month-on-month.

In June, the penetration rate of NEVs in retail sales reached 53.3 percent, up 4.8 percentage points year-on-year and 0.4 percentage points month-on-month.

In June, the penetration rate of NEVs in retail sales for domestic brands was 75.4 percent, 30.3 percent for luxury brands, and 5.3 percent for mainstream joint-venture brands.

China’s wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in June reached 1.241 million units, up 27.0 percent year-on-year and 1.6 percent month-on-month.

The penetration rate of NEVs in wholesale sales in June was 49.8 percent, up 4.6 percentage points year-on-year but down 2.8 percentage points from May.

The penetration rate of NEVs from domestic Chinese brands in wholesale sales in June was 66.7 percent, luxury brands 33 percent, and mainstream joint-venture brands 6.6 percent.

In June, 198,000 passenger NEVs were exported from China, up 116.6 percent year-on-year but down 1.0 percent from May, accounting for 41.1 percent of passenger vehicle exports.

BEVs accounted for 63 percent of NEV exports in June, down from 76 percent in the same period last year.

A0-class and A00-class BEVs accounted for 49 percent of NEV exports, up from 31 percent in the same period last year.
