Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw a rebound in retail sales in China last month as it allocated more local production capacity for domestic deliveries.

The US EV maker sold 61,484 vehicles in China in June, the second highest monthly figure this year, trailing only March’s 74,127 units, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This represents a 3.75 percent increase from the 59,261 units sold in the same month last year, reversing the previous two consecutive months of year-on-year declines. Sales for the month increased by 59.33 percent from the 38,588 units sold in May.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, delivering to domestic customers and serving as an export hub.

The factory — Giga Shanghai — exported 10,115 vehicles in June, a 13.89 percent decrease from the 11,746 units exported in the same month last year and a 56.16 percent decrease from the 23,074 units exported in May.

Since April 2024, Tesla’s Shanghai factory has seen year-on-year declines in exports in most months, with only August 2024 and May this year showing year-on-year growth, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

In the first six months of the year, Tesla’s Shanghai factory exported 101,064 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 31.85 percent.

China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales in June totaled 1.11 million units, up 29.7 percent year-on-year and up 8.2 percent month-on-month, according to the CPCA.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) retail sales came in at 661,000 units, up 33.1 percent year-on-year and up 7.8 percent month-on-month.

This means Tesla’s market share in China’s NEV market in June was 5.53 percent, down from 6.92 percent in the same period last year, though higher than May’s 3.78 percent.

In the BEV market, Tesla’s share in China in June was 9.30 percent, down from 12.02 percent in the same period last year, though higher than May’s 6.36 percent.

Including exports, Tesla China sold 71,599 vehicles in June, up 0.83 percent from 71,007 in the same period last year, reversing eight consecutive months of year-on-year declines. This represents a 16.12 percent increase from 61,662 in May.

In the first six months of the year, Tesla China sold 364,474 vehicles, including exports. This represents a decrease of 14.57 percent compared to the 426,623 units sold in the same period last year.

The wholesale sales of the Model Y, including exports, totaled 51,253 units in June, marking a 16.61 percent increase from the 43,951 units sold in the same period last year, and a 29.67 percent increase from the 39,527 units sold in May.

In the first six months of the year, the Model Y’s wholesale sales, including exports, totaled 214,034 units, a decrease of 16.71 percent from the 256,979 units sold in the same period last year.

The Model 3’s wholesale sales, including exports, in June were 20,346 units, a decrease of 24.80 percent from the 27,056 units in the same period last year and a decrease of 8.08 percent from the 22,135 units in May.

In the first six months of the year, the Model 3’s wholesale sales, including exports, totaled 150,440 units, a decrease of 11.32 percent from the 169,644 units sold in the same period last year.

In the second quarter, Tesla’s retail sales in China totaled 128,803 units, a decrease of 11.72 percent year-on-year, ending three consecutive quarters of growth. Sales for the quarter also decreased by 4.31 percent compared to the first quarter.

Data released by Tesla last week showed that it delivered 384,122 vehicles globally in the second quarter, a decrease of 13.48 percent year-on-year, although it increased by 14.09 percent compared to the first quarter.

This means that sales in China accounted for 33.53 percent of Tesla’s global deliveries in the second quarter, the lowest in the past year.

Tesla has raised the price of the long-range Model 3 in China to RMB 285,500 and extended the range from 713km to 753 km.
